Dr. William Fowlds presentation on the Rhino Poaching Crisis

Dr. William Fowlds presentation on the Rhino Poaching Crisis
January 12, 2017 admin

Join us for one of two evenings as Global Conservation Force & Dr. William Fowlds team up to discuss the future of wild rhino.

Dr William folds with Mike Veale from Global Conservation Force

We are excited to announce that we will host Dr. Will Fowlds (Veterinarian), on his first visit to California, for two events. Our plan is to raise awareness about the rhino poaching crisis and funds to sponsor more boots-on-the-ground conservation efforts. The events will be on March 10th in San Diego and on March 11th in Los Angeles. Those who attend the event will have the unique opportunity to hear first hand stories about rehabilitating rhinos (Hope & Thandi) who survived poachers, as well as what day-to-day life is like as an Anti Poaching Ranger. Mike Veale, Founder and President of GCF, will introduce both evenings with an explanation of the global rhino poaching crisis and the multifocal approach we are taking to combat poaching and extinction. Dr. Fowlds’ presentation will follow Mike’s. After each presentation we will have a Q&A session followed by an intermission where we will serve complimentary appetizers.

“Dr. William Fowlds’ day job includes darting lions, elephants and antelope, but in 2012 he was called out to a harrowing situation on the Kariega Game Reserve, about 20 km from his home on Amakhala Game Reserve in the Eastern Cape province. The situation was unlike anything he’d encountered before. Overnight, three rhinos had been illegally darted using veterinary drugs and the poachers had brutally removed bone, skin and horn with either machetes or axes, leaving the rhinos for dead. One rhino had, in fact, already died from its injuries but Themba, a male, and Thandi, a female, were still alive when they were discovered the next morning.

Dr William Fowlds’ struggle to save Themba and Thandi made headline news around the world and he was interviewed on Sky News, BBC News, CNN and ABC television. In 2013 he was invited to tell the story of Thandi and Themba at the Royal Geographic Society in London, where Bear Grylls introduced him to an audience of over 700 people. “-http://medivet.co.uk
