Protecting Pangolins: How You Can Help on World Pangolin Day

February 15

Free

Every year, on the third Saturday in February (February 15th this year), conservationists and wildlife lovers around the world celebrate World Pangolin Day—a day dedicated to raising awareness and taking action to protect the world’s most trafficked mammal. Pangolins, often called “scaly anteaters,” are facing a devastating crisis due to illegal wildlife trafficking. At Global Conservation Force (GCF), we are committed to fighting for their survival through a multi-faceted approach that includes counter wildlife trafficking investigations, anti-poaching initiatives, K9 conservation units, and global education programs.

How GCF Is Fighting for Pangolins

Counter Wildlife Trafficking Investigations

Pangolins are targeted for their scales and meat, fueling a billion-dollar black market. GCF actively supports counter wildlife trafficking operations, providing essential resources, training, and investigative support to law enforcement agencies battling the illegal trade. These strategic efforts disrupt smuggling networks and prevent pangolins from being exploited for profit.

K9 Conservation Units: Protecting Pangolins from Poaching & Trafficking

GCF has deployed highly trained K9s across Africa and Asia to combat pangolin trafficking, assist in conservation monitoring, and protect critical pangolin habitats:

  • K9 Reaper: Works in South Africa alongside law enforcement on strategic counter-trafficking operations, helping uncover illegal wildlife products, including pangolin scales and live pangolins being smuggled.
  • K9 Thor: Specializes in tracking and monitoring pangolins after their rescue and rehabilitation, ensuring their safety post-release.
  • K9 Clive: Based in Bangladesh with our partners at Creative Conservation Alliance, Clive is trained to research wild pangolin populations, helping scientists collect vital conservation data.
  • K9 Kesa: Works with our partners at Tango K9, securing pristine pangolin habitat and sniffing out wildlife smugglers at Kruger National Park’s entry and exit points.

Each of these incredible dogs plays a crucial role in protecting pangolins before, during, and after trafficking threats.

Educating Future Wildlife Warriors in Vietnam

The demand for pangolin scales and meat continues to fuel the crisis, but education is key to breaking this cycle. Since 2017, GCF has run a three-month annual program in Hanoi, Vietnam, educating students from elementary to high school on wildlife conservation. This initiative fosters Wildlife Warriors, empowering young conservationists to combat illegal wildlife trade in their own communities.

Training and Equipping Rangers Across Africa and Asia

From South Africa to India, GCF trains, equips, and supports anti-poaching units working on the frontlines to protect pangolins and other endangered species. We provide essential gear, tactical training, and ongoing support in dozens of pangolin habitats worldwide, ensuring reserves and protected areas remain safe havens for these elusive creatures.
