Global Conservation Force is proud to have partnered with Ikhala Veterinary Clinic to deliver a full day of hands-on K9 First Aid training to 27 anti-poaching K9 handlers from across the Eastern Cape, South Africa.
These dedicated handlers came from across the region—representing teams from Lalibela, Kariega, Amakhala, Bucklands, Addo National Park, Tanglewood, Kwandwe, and Great Fish River. Each one of them plays a vital role in the daily fight to protect South Africa’s wildlife, working side-by-side with highly trained dogs who track poachers, patrol dangerous terrain, and often risk their lives in the process.
The training course was designed specifically to prepare handlers for the types of medical emergencies they may face in the field. Under the guidance of the expert veterinary team at Ikhala, handlers learned how to recognize and respond to:
Heat stroke and dehydration
Snake bites
Puncture wounds and lacerations
Fractures and sprains
Poisoning symptoms
Emergency wound care and trauma response
This wasn’t a lecture-based seminar—it was active, practical, and scenario-driven, empowering handlers to respond quickly and effectively when every second counts.
Each participant left the course with:
A Certificate of Completion recognizing their newly gained skills
A fully equipped K9-specific medical response kit, packed with trauma supplies, dressings, wraps, and medications customized to support canine health in remote and high-risk environments
These kits are now part of the daily patrol gear for these handlers—allowing them to deliver critical care to their K9 partners in the field, potentially saving lives when veterinary support isn’t immediately available.
“Our K9s are more than working animals—they are teammates, protectors, and family. Ensuring their health and safety directly strengthens the impact of the anti-poaching teams they serve with.”
— Mike Veale, Founder, Global Conservation Force
